Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) is one of my all-time favorite animated movies Directed by Robert Zemeckis(Back to the Future, Forrest Gump), and based on the novel, Who Censored Roger Rabbit? by Gary K. Wolfe, it is a real-life film intertwined with an animated world, with both animated and real-life stars. The movie takes place in the Los Angeles area, around the 1930's. A toon-hating and booze-drinking private dectective, Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins), who's hired by the animated Roger Rabbit (voiced by Charles Fleischer) to see if his foxy and sly animated wife, Jessica (voiced by Kathleen Turner) is playing pattycake with a real-life man, the owner of ToonTown, Marvin Acme. When Acme is killed, and Roger is framed as the prime suspect, Valiant must put aside his toon-hating ways to save Roger and his toon friends from being liquified by the evil Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd).
Along the way the duo get accidentally handcuffed together and must escape from Doom's animated weasel cronies in Benny, the animated cab. To tell any more of the plot would give away the story, so I won't go on. One of my favorite parts of the film is the presence of all of the famous animated cartoons that have cameos, such as Dumbo, Mickey Mouse, Puff the Magic Dragon, Daffy Duck, etc. At the end of the movie, a whole slew of recognizable cartoons are shown in ToonTown, and it's a nice touch on Zemeckis' part, because it brings some fond cartoon memories to the film, and adding more engagement with the plot. It is definitely a great family film, and not only for kids, by any means, and can be enjoyed by adults and older kids as well. It is a bit intense for really little kids at parts, thus the PG rating, but it probably wouldn't bother most kids.
| MPAA reasons for rating: | Rated PG for mild animated and physical violence, some suggestive dialogue |
